    DOHA, Qatar - England scored six goals in its opening World Cup game against Iran, but it was the two it conceded that concerned coach Gareth Southgate and provide hope for the United States.
    “By the end we looked sloppy,” said Southgate of the 6-2 win over Iran on Monday. He also warned the U.S. would be coming “full-throttle” in Friday's Group B match.
    The tournament has already produced some shocking results, including Saudi Arabia's win against Argentina and Japan's upset over Germany.

    THOUSAND OAKS - Rams kicker Matt Gay will likely rush into the locker room after practice Friday afternoon and request to have the TVs on the United States Men's National Team's World Cup match against England.
    Gay has a rooting interest for the Group B match as an American, former soccer standout and as a husband. Gay's wife, Millie, and her family hail from the United Kingdom.
    The Pro Bowl kicker will probably miss the first half of USMNT's second match from Qatar because of practice, but he's expecting a lively family group text to provide him with updates.

  • Neise wins skeleton World Cup opener, Clarke 2nd for USA

    WHISTLER, British Columbia - Olympic champion Hannah Neise of Germany won the opening women's skeleton World Cup race of the season Thursday, while Hallie Clarke of the U.S. tied for second in her debut and gave the American program its best finish in nearly six years.
    Neise finished two runs in 1.47.40, while Clarke and Britain's Brogan Crowley shared the silver with times of 1:47.58.
